facebook reminder

so on the facebook website it tells you which of your friends has a birthday coming up. for example, today is my 18th birthday. i currently have 20 messages in my mailbox from people who have written on my wall wishing me a happy birthday. then i ask myself, is that genuine? would those 20 or so people have remembered my actual birthday if it wasn't for facebook giving them a reminder?
